moe.’s Rex Jam at GOTV Raises $4,500 for Local Music Education
Thanks to the help of moe., Jay Blakesberg, and generous on-site support from fans, this year’s Rex Jam at Gathering of the Vibes was a huge success! Created several years back, the Rex Jam model serves as a way to connect musicians, fans and local non-profits that support music and The Arts. Rex has been working with The Gathering of the Vibes (and their own philanthropic organization, Terrapin Foundation) for many years now to host a Rex Jam on site during the festival weekend as a way to give back locally and demonstrate the power of grassroots giving, where contributions of $1, $5, $10 or $20 collected from fans during the Jam have an immediate positive impact.
This year was no exception! Rex was grateful to have the enthusiastic participation of jamband veterans moe., who hosted the Rex Jam four songs into their Sunday afternoon set. After moe. guitarist Al Schnier provided some background information on both Rex and Terrapin Foundation, as well as this year’s award recipient, he announced the Jam; then volunteers circulated throughout the crowd with donation bins. To add to the fun, those contributing $10 or more received a raffle ticket to be entered in a contest to have their photo taken with the band by renowned concert photographer Jay Blakesberg. During an approximately 10 minute-long version of moe.’s original song, “Billy Goat,” eight volunteers collected a total of $2,468.51. Both Rex and GOTV pledged to match up to the first $1,000 of fan donations (and GOTV rounded up to $1,031.49) so the final contribution amount is $4,500!
This year’s recipient of the Rex Jam proceeds is Bridgeport, CT-local non-profit, KEYS Music (Kids Empowered by Your Support). KEYS’s mission is to bring one-to-one instrument lessons and group music instruction to under-served inner-city children in Bridgeport, CT who have no other access to this empowering life experience. Rex is thrilled to have the opportunity to support an organization offering musical and artistic opportunities for kids who would otherwise never have this chance.
Many thanks to Harry Moran of GOTV, all the Terrapin Foundation volunteers who helped out, Al Schnier and moe., Jay Blakesberg and all the kind folks who dug deep to help make this event a huge success!
