Fire on the Mountain Vertical Challenge Returns!

We’re delighted to announce that tickets go on sale Wednesday, January 6 for The 2nd Annual  Fire on the Mountain Vertical Challenge ski race, taking place in Squaw Valley on Friday, April 1, 2016.

It’s not just a race, but a test of endurance and strategy, where successful teams will ski/ride in excess of 100,000 vertical feet. Once all compulsory runs are skied, racers can take their pick of lifts and terrain to rack up vertical and enjoy one of the finest mountains in the world.  All proceeds will go to The Rex Foundation, with 50% of donations being allocated to charities local to the Olympic Valley / Truckee area.

General admission tickets go on sale January 6 through EventBrite.com. The top 3 teams will receive prizes and will be announced from the main stage Friday night at the WinterWonderGrass Festival. Race registration, includes a Friday Squaw Valley lift ticket, access to the Rex Foundation after-party at Bar One and a VIP pass to the Friday WinterWonderGrass Festival on-site at Squaw Valley.

Racers can register together as a team of four or individually; individuals will be placed in a team. Early Bird discounted tickets are available through February 29th for $1000 (team of four) or $275 (individually), $250 (Squaw Pass holder). A portion of ticket purchase is tax deductible.

Event Schedule

7:30 a.m. – 8:25 a.m.: Registration (Bar One)

8:25 a.m. – 8:35 a.m.: Competitor meeting (Bar One)

8:55 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: LeMans start at Cushing Lake

9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.: Vertical Challenge (lunch at leisure)

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.: Verify competitor statistics (Bar One)

2:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.: Rex Foundation After-Party (Bar One)

7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Silent Auction (Bar One)

4:30 p.m.: Event and Silent Auction Vertical Challenge results announced

The Challenge

The Vertical Challenge is not a race, but a test of your endurance and strategy, where successful teams will ski/ride in excess of 100,000 vertical feet!

  • You must ski on all compulsory runs; if you finish early, take your pick of lifts and terrain to rack up vertical and enjoy one of the finest mountains in the world!
  • Headwall: 2 runs (1750 vertical feet, each)
  • KT22: 2 runs (1767 vertical feet, each)
  • Granite Chief: 2 runs (1000 vertical feet, each)
  • Solitude: 1 run (660 vertical feet)
  • Squaw Creek: 1 run (1309 vertical feet)
  • Siberia: 1 run (916 vertical feet)
  • Tucker Carpet at Snow Ventures: 1 run (15 vertical feet; picture at bottom)

The Business End

Rules

  • Download the “Ski Tracks” app to track your vertical accomplishments for the day; the duration of your session cannot be longer than 5 hours and 30 minutes
  • Helmets are required for each competitor
  • Pre-event meeting is mandatory for all team captains and all competitors are encouraged to attend
  • Each team will appoint a captain who will be responsible for tracking vertical, taking pictures as required and escalating issues to the organizers, as needed
  • You must take a picture of 3 of your 4 team members at the top of each lift – with the exception of Tucker Carpet, where you will take a picture at the bottom of the lift
  • All teams must ride the lifts TOGETHER, so you are only as fast as your slowest skier/rider
  • Abide by all safety warnings, as slow skiing rules will be enforced; reckless skiers risk loss of their pass and disqualification from the event

  • Recreational: enjoy spring skiing and a great party at Squaw and know that you are helping our community!
