The following are examples of Rex beneficiaries working in different ways to support a healthy environment.

Environmental Protection Information Center - Rex beneficiary 2005

The Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC) is a community based organization that combines public education, citizen advocacy and strategic litigation with integrated, science-based approaches to protect and restore forests, watersheds, coastal estuaries, and native species in northwest California. EPIC originated in 1977 in response and defense of aerial pesticide application by industrial logging companies in Humboldt County. Since that victory, it has worked to ensure that state and federal agencies uphold environmental laws and protect endangered species.

Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice - Rex beneficiary 2005

Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice works to educate, empower, mobilize, and unite community members and the public at large to stop existing and potential threats from pollution. Greenaction was founded in 1997 by California and Arizona environmental justice leaders as a response to serious health threats due to industry and governmental practices of environmental racism and injustice. The Rex Foundation grant will be used towards Greenaction's "Stop Incinerators in Disguise, Support Healthy Communities" campaign, working to prevent the sting of incineration-like technologies for medical and solid waste, tires, and sewage sludge in California and Arizona. The goal is to continue the decade long trend to move the waste industry away from incineration towards zero-dioxin waste treatment and pollution prevention programs, and to share the victories and expertise with allies across the U.S. and the world.

Conservation Value - Rex beneficiary 2006

The mission of Conservation Value (CV) is to promote the benefits of sustainability by helping consumers, companies and government agencies find opportunities to simultaneously benefit the environment, save money and improve their health and quality of life. CVs primary service is to synthesize and disseminate information, specifically focusing on the use of green products and services, and improving sustainability in the home, business and in land management practices.

Okanogan Highlands Alliance - Rex beneficiary 2006

The Okanogan Highlands Alliance is dedicated to educating members and the public about the threat of chemical leach mining to the quality of air, soil, water, human health, wildlife and natural ecosystems. OHA participates in decisions involving the integrity, sustainability and prosperity of the community and the environment and takes decisive legal action when necessary to protect the Okanogan Highlands and other areas against environmental degradation. OHA has been effective in stopping what would have been the first large-scale open pit, cyanide leach gold mine in Washington State, thereby empowering the conservation community and changing the way mining had been done nationally.

Mattole Restoration Council - Rex beneficiary 2003

The Mattole Restoration Council is committed to restoring health to the Mattole River watershed. Through the Mattole Good Roads and Clear Creeks programs the council aims to reduce sediment inputs into the wild Mattole River and its tributaries. The Council works closely with the Mattole Salmon Group.

Mattole Salmon Group - Rex beneficiary 2003

The Mattole Salmon Group is dedicated to restoring Salmon populations along the Mattole River. The group has developed a protocol from the best available scientific sources to measure eight parameters of salmonid habitat and water quality. Through Rescue Rearing and Hatchbox programs they have been able to both maintain Salmon trapped by silting and to propagate genetically wild Chinook Salmon and later release them as the mouth of the River opens. The group works closely with the Mattole Restoration Council.

Musicians United to Sustain the Environment (MUSE) - Rex beneficiary 1994

MUSE is a rapidly growing non-profit environmental organization with two primary goals. First, raising funds for effective grassroots environmental projects through CD sales, concerts, and public donations. Second, heightening environmental awareness -- a vital step to help ensure the sustainable stewardship of our ecosystems. Of particularly interest is protection of endangered or threatened species and preservation of existing wilderness habitats. Also, the emphasis is on environmental education for our young -- the soon-to-be stewards of our natural heritage.

Environmental Defense Fund - Rex beneficiary 1989

Environmental Defense is dedicated to protecting the environmental rights of all people, including future generations. Among these rights are clean air and water, healthy and nourishing food, and a flourishing ecosystem. A generation ago, Environmental Defense helped launch the modern environmental movement by winning a ban on the pesticide DDT, thus showing how a handful of individuals can use science and the law to bring about national reform. Since then, Environmental Defense has grown into one of America's most influential environmental advocacy groups.

Friends of the Earth - Rex beneficiary 1988

The mission of Friends of the Earth is to defend the environment and champion a healthy and just world. Friends of the Earth is the U.S. voice of an influential, international network of grassroots groups in 70 countries. Founded in San Francisco in 1969 by David Brower, Friends of the Earth has for decades been at the forefront of high-profile efforts to create a more healthy, just world. Our members were the founders of what is now the world's largest federation of democratically elected environmental groups, Friends of the Earth International.

Friends of the River - Rex beneficiary 1986

Friends of the River was founded in 1973 during the struggle to save the Stanislaus River from New Melones Dam. Following that campaign, the organization grew to become California's statewide river conservation group. Friends of the River is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and restoring California's rivers, streams, and their watersheds. The organization accomplishes its mission by providing public education, citizen activist training and organizing, and expert advocacy to influence public policy decisions on land, water, and energy management issues.
