Cancer Research Success
In 1994 the Rex Foundation gave a grant to the The Brassica Chemo-protection Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University to pursue their goal of developing nutritional strategies to reduce the risk of developing malignancy. Reporting recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers said that extracts of isothiocyanates from broccoli sprouts markedly reduced the incidence, size and number of mammary tumors in laboratory rats exposed to a standard carcinogen. With this discovery, broccoli sprouts might offer an easy, palatable and fairly uniform way of getting at least some of the protective benefits of a high-vegetable diet.
Addition to the Board
The Rex Foundation welcomes Bruce Hornsby to the Board of Directors. Bruce, an RCA recording artist, is an old family friend, supporter of the Arts and defender of Democracy. He played regularly with the Dead in the early '90s and has recently been a mainstay of the Furthur Festival.
Objectives
The Rex Foundation was created as a charitable foundation by members of the Grateful Dead and friends. It aims to help secure a healthy environment, promote individuality in the arts, provide support to critical and necessary social services, assist others less fortunate than ourselves, protect the rights of indigenous people and ensure their cultural survival, build a stronger community, and educate children and adults everywhere.
How Rex Works
Virtually all of our grant recipients are selected through the personal knowledge of our decision makers, as a result, unsolicited requests will not be considered. We have no application forms and no published guidelines. Grants are made once or twice a year, and our report and newsletter are published annually.
Help Support Rex
Rex is a growing circle of donors. We encourage donations to help support our work. If you wish to contribute, we welcome your tax-deductible contributions.
The Rex Foundation is named after Rex Jackson, a Grateful Dead roadie and later road manager until his untimely death in 1976.
