News From FAIR Girls
Rex board member Rosalie Howarth sends along this update from Andrea Powell, founder and executive director of FAIR Girls, recipient of the 2011 Bill Graham Award for its work against human trafficking. Congratulations to them on these milestones and recognition of their great work!
FAIR Girls just found out that we were awarded a D.C. government grant from the Office on Victim Services (VOCA) to formally support our court advocacy and case management services! This one year grant will also support 10% of FAIR Girls’ efforts to launch our new leadership home for survivors, the Vida Center (more to come soon!). So, we will be hiring formerly Brooklyn based attorney, Mary Katherine Burke, who has worked previously in Brooklyn to serve trafficked clients. MK will be providing legal support to up to 30 trafficked girls a year in our program as well as offering case management and legal help to FAIR Girls.
I also wanted to share here a link to the CNN Freedom Blog where FAIR Girls’ Director of Programs, Teresa Tomassoni, was quoted in response to the continued arrest of child victims of sex trafficking in America. There are many other great things coming and we are working hard with the girls, on grants, and the launch of our Vida Center housing campaign.
