The Foundation began in 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland, with a philosophy that students, placed in small classes in challenging settings, respond to real-world applications of academics and the “work world” far more readily than they do in a traditional classroom.

The Rex grant is specifically for Living Classrooms’ notable, and highly acclaimed music initiative the Queen Beez Program. This program works with middle school-aged girls from Ward 7 who have been recommended to the program by police officers from the Sixth District Metropolitan Police Department. These girls are presented with the opportunity to learn about E-STEM topics and careers, through a lively curriculum that uses hip-hop music to engage students in learning and inspire their creativity.
