Sierra Avalanche Center’s (SAC) mission is to inform and educate the public about backcountry avalanche conditions in the greater Lake Tahoe area. SAC was formed in 2006 to fill a community need to provide avalanche safety information and public support to affected agencies. SAC operates an educational program called Know Before You Go to provide basic avalanche awareness presentations to youth ski teams, schools, outdoor programs and the public. PSA announcements on local and regional TV and radio spots announce the daily avalanche forecast and public safety information for the visiting public to inform them of winter hazards and safety messaging. The intent of SAC programs is to provide base level knowledge to all in Tahoe to be aware of avalanche hazard; to educate about safety and being prepared; and to reach the general public so that no one mistakenly gets in harm’s way while enjoying the outdoors.
