Windham Harm Reduction Center
The Windham Harm Reduction Coalition (WHRC) provides access to sterile syringes to drug addicts waiting to get into overburdened treatment programs in eastern Connecticut. The Rex Foundation grant will help to start the state’s first Overdose Prevention Education and Naloxone Distribution Program (OEND) in Connecticut, to help stem the epidemic of drug deaths due to overdose. Naloxone is a prescription drug designed to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Accidental overdoses on opioids such as oxycodone or heroine, claim the lives one American every 19 minutes. The CDC recently reported that deaths from prescription painkiller overdoses have increased more than 400% since 1999 among women, and 265% among men. A recent study found veterans to be dying of accidental overdose at a rate of nearly double that of the general population.
