Rex Musical Caravan: A Retrospective

The Rex Musical Caravan is a great way to further a tradition of grassroots giving and demonstrate the power of community, service and the arts. Many artists are helping bring to life the Rex Musical Caravan at different stops across the U.S. Together, we’re on the bus of the Rex Community Caravan, enjoying great music and kindred connections as a grassroots philanthropic community, while helping the Rex Foundation carry out its grant making.

Passion Presents: Steve Kimock & Friends

Passion Presents is on board the Rex Musical Caravan with $1 for every ticket purchased going to support the Rex Foundation. Matthew Beck and Steven Watts were good friends involved in the music business who loved Humboldt County. In 2004 their talents and passions were combined to create Humboldt County’s only full-service music promotion company, Passion Presents.

Five Eyed Hand

Five Eyed Hand is on board the Rex Musical Caravan with $1 for every ticket purchased going to support the Rex Foundation.

Five Eyed Hand  rolled into 2009 with some great shows and repeat visits to some of its favorite spots. The summer of 2008 brought the band to High Sierra Music Festival, Harmony Festival and Bobolink. During their psychedelic jazz journey Five Eyed Hand has had the great pleasure of jamming with Fareed Haque,Eric Levy, Jeff Miller,Eric McFadden, Trevor Garrod, James Whiton, Garaj Mahal and Blue Turtle Seduction.

Dark Star Orchestra performed at the Rex Foundation Black Tie Dye Ball at the Nokia Theatre in New York. Proceeds help support the Rex Foundation mission to fund grassroots programs in the New York area and beyond.

Human Rights Awareness Tour, Fall 2008

Blue Turtle Seduction offered Jerry Jams CDs during their Human Rights Awareness tour collecting contributions of $20 or more. The Jerry Jams CDs were created in 2002 to help raise funds for the Rex Foundation and New Jersey musical programs for youth.

Blue Turtle Seduction was on board the Musical Caravan with $1 of every ticket sold at their Las Tortugas Dance of the Dead Festival going to support the Rex Foundation.

Tea Leaf Green played 2 nights back to back at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA, where $1 of each ticket sold went to benefit the Rex Foundation.

Las Tortugas Music Festival

October 30th- November 2nd, Groveland, CA

The 3rd Annual “Las Tortugas Dance of the Dead” Music Festival, was held Halloween weekend at the Evergreen Lodge in Groveland, CA. Many artists performed at this event, including ALO, Tea Leaf Green, Blue Turtle Seduction, Melvin Seals’ JGB, and many others. The Rex Foundation maintained a presence throughout the festival, and $1 of each ticket sold was donated to Rex.

 


New Riders Of the Purple Sage

New Riders Of the Purple Sage

New Riders of the Purple Sage helped the Rex Foundation celebrate its first fundraising event in New Orleans, at the Blue Nile nightclub. The Rex Foundation has given over $20,000 to the Katrina Relief Fund since 2005 to support the rebuilding of the historic area.

Black Tie Dye Ball

Dark Star Orchestra performed the Rex Foundation’s first Black Tie Dye Ball in Los Angeles at the Henry Fonda Theatre. Proceeds for this event went to support Theatre of Hearts , Virginia Avenue Project, and Hands for Hope. These festive occasions provide the opportunity to collaborate with gifted performers that care about the Rex Foundation and want to further what the Grateful Dead started 25 years ago. At each Ball, the Rex supporters enjoy a unique musical experience, while also celebrating each community’s talent, enterprise and community spirit.

The Rex Community Caravan went on Festival Tour this summer with Rex Jams at many of the following Festivals. Proceeds totaling $10,709 went to support local area music and arts programs.

Tea Leaf Green &amp; Moonalice

Tea Leaf Green w/ Moonalice, Blue Turtle Seduction, and Hot Buttered Rum

February – April, San Francisco, CA and New York City, NY

Tea Leaf Green took the Rex Musical Caravan across the country with various artists. They performed with Moonalice on February 29th, and Blue Turtle Seduction on March 1st at the Fillmore in San Francisco, CA. Moonalice joined once more on April 18th, followed by Hot Buttered Rum on April 19th at the Highline Ballroom in New York City, NY.

Donna Jean and the Tricksters kicked off their tour with a CD release party, performance, and benefit for the Rex Foundation at the Knitting Factory in New York City. Both the Rex reception and the show were sold out, and the band played – according to all reports – fantastically.
