REX FEEDBACK

Letters Received from Beneficiaries

May 23, 1996, Dear Mr. Rifkin

A lot of time has passed and I've been meaning to send a letter of regret on the passing of Jerry Garcia. I hope you will accept this with our thoughts of peace as you pick up the pieces and move forward.

I would also like to extend our sincere appreciate for all that your organization has done, not only for us but for the other organizations that have been able to continue doing important work in our country. Your organization has touched so many lives. In our organization alone there are eight staff that have been very moved by you generosity as well as 15 board members. There are also 400 volunteers that work for our organization that appreciate your contributions not to forget the beneficiaries of your generosity, the 40,000 people a month that we serve.

Having lost my father this last year I know that the loss is there and always will be. My pain has eased somewhat with time I hope this is true for you. I hope you continue to acknowledge all of the great work that all of you have done for people in need as well as the many fans that love the music; Jerry was an incredible gift to our society who won't be easily forgotten.

With much love and respect,

Suzanne Pasky-Fouts
Executive Director

From Camp Winnarainbow's "Dear Friends of Camp" newsletter:

This year, the Rex Foundation has temporarily stopped grant giving, at least for a year. Rex was funded by the generosity of the Grateful Dead which disbanded this year due to the death of guitarist Jerry Garcia. We want to acknowledge them for all they have done. They were the first foundation to fund us, and they continued to do so for 12 years. We will miss them. We thank them with all our hearts. If it were not for the Rex Foundation, hundreds of children would not have had the chance to go to camp.

To: Mr. Danny Rifkin:

Enclosed you will find $3,302.00 in contributions for the Rex Foundation from 114 NetHeads (Grateful Dead fans on the Usenet newsgroup rec.music.gdead).

These are contributions from the second Rex Foundation Benefit Tree, the "Farewell Jerry Tree." There are a few more checks to come, as we wanted to only send in checks of those people who have their tapes already. As the last few leaves of the tree are finished, I will send in the rest of the checks.

Sincerely,
Brian J. Tiffany

Dear Danny,

Thank you very much for your letter acknowledging my donation to The Rex Foundation. I thought the source of the donation would be of interest to you.

In early October, a group of New Hampshire-based Dead Heads wanted to have a big party to celebrate Jerry's life. We rented the Polish American Club (of Nashua, NH) with hardwood floors, a BIG stage, and heavy velour drapes. The perfect setting for 1 80-or-so swirlers, two excellent bands, and lots of good spirit. Between bands, people fought for the mic to share impromptu stories from their Dead years, letters they'd received from loved-ones who were mourning Jerry, and people read poems they had written about their years on the bus.

The proceeds of the party went to The Rex Foundation and to a long-time Dead Head friend who is in legal trouble for all of the obvious.

Anyway, it was between 10 - 22 years on the bus for most people in attendance that evening. There's an emptiness in all of us, but were grateful for the time we had. I guess there's nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile. A
