The Rex Foundation has no paid board members. Virtually all of our grant recipients are selected through the personal knowledge of our decision makers – as a result, grant requests are not solicited. We have no application forms and no published guidelines. Grants are made once or twice a year, and our report is published annually. For more information on Rex, see Mission.

The Grateful Dead ceased touring following Jerry Garcia's death on August 9, 1995, so that in subsequent years funding of the Rex Foundation was curtailed and grants restricted to the three Awards. See the Annual Reports for details.

In 2001, Rex began to renew its grant giving capacity with The Healing Power of Music benefit concert.
