John Perry Barlow 1947-2018
With heavy hearts we learned of the passing of our friend and founding board member John Perry Barlow. Barlow was many things to most of us, and he made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. He epitomized the frontier spirit, self-reliant but not self-restrained, self-assured without being selfish, selfless and never self-conscious. He spoke his mind with conviction, keeping you in the conversation until he felt he’d won you over.
As a board member he brought many wonderful grants to the table, most notably one for his beloved Electronic Frontier Foundation when it was first getting started. As was often the case, he fought to the bitter end for EFF, believing it was a just cause and could be a formidable force for good in the world.
We appreciate John for all that he did for Rex and for what he did to make the world a better place. His ceaseless questioning of what many people blindly accept is a lesson that should stay with us all.
John, while you may be done writing the words, they will always be yours, and we thank you for them.
