Based in San Francisco, Sunsar Maya was founded on the belief that education is the key to lifting vulnerable children out of poverty. The mission is to identify educational needs in underdeveloped areas of Nepal and create sustainable, long-term projects to meet those needs. The name Sunsar Maya means “World of Love” in Nepali and represents the shared belief that compassion, generosity, and commitment can create positive, lasting change. This fall (2015), Sunsar Maya is launching its second major initiative, an after-school program, which will run in conjunction with an educational sponsorship program and will be the first of its kind in Kathmandu. The program will provide additional educational opportunities for the orphaned and abandoned children who have nowhere to go but back to their orphanage after the private school program Sunsar Maya sponsors in the morning.
