The Square Peg Foundation
The Square Peg Foundation in Half Moon Bay rescues former racehorses and retrains them for useful second careers, including serving as therapy animals for people with challenges like autism, ADHD and related neuropsychiatric conditions. The Foundation takes in thoroughbred horses whose racing careers have ended due to injury, lack of profitability, or age, and trains them to become calm and disciplined so they can participate in lesson programs.
Children or adults who are closed off and isolated are given the opportunity to become more social, live more fulfilling lives and learn job skills while they care for, train, and ride the horses. Through volunteering, life skills training, and summer family camps, in which participants enjoy horseback riding, surfing, and cookouts around a campfire, both horses and people find new opportunities in bleak circumstances, thereby turning “I wish” into “I can” (the Foundation’s motto).
