The Black Banjo Reclamation Project’s mission is to empower and reconnect Black people as practitioners of the earth-based folk tradition of the banjo. There are many African-based instruments, music, and culture that exist and have persisted to create mainstream music of every kind in America. The banjo is critical to this and holds with it the complicated histories that have included chattel slavery and minstrel black-face entertainment. BBRP has been healing the past and creating pathways for the future of Black individuals and communities in folk music, including bluegrass, old-time, country, rock, jazz, and hip-hop.
